French, Malian forces capture Gao rebel stronghold

KONNA, Mali/PARIS (Reuters) - French and Malian forces fighting Islamist rebels took control on Saturday of the rebel bastion of Gao, the biggest military success so far in an offensive against al Qaeda-allied insurgents occupying the country's north.

The United States and Europe back the U.N.-mandated Mali operation as a counterstrike against the threat of radical Islamist jihadists using the West African state's inhospitable Sahara desert as a launching pad for international attacks.

In an overnight assault on Gao backed by French warplanes and helicopters, French special forces seized the town's airport and a key bridge over the River Niger, killing an estimated dozen Islamist fighters without suffering any losses or injuries, the French army said.

"The Malian army and the French control Gao today," Malian army spokesman Lieutenant Diaran Kone told Reuters.

The speed of the French action in a two-week-old campaign suggested French and Malian government troops intended to drive aggressively into the north of Mali in the next few days against other Islamist rebel strongholds, such as Timbuktu and Kidal.

There have been 30 French air strikes on militant targets around Gao and Timbuktu in the past 36 hours.

News that the French and Malian troops were at Gao, the largest northern town held by the Islamists, came as African states struggled to deploy a planned 6,000-strong intervention force in Mali, known as AFISMA, under a U.N. mandate.

French army spokesman Colonel Thierry Burkhard said French forces had come under fire from rebel fighters inside Gao, but that both the bridge and airport runway were undamaged.

In Paris, the French defense ministry said that Malian and French troop reinforcements were brought in and that soldiers from Chad and Niger, who have experience in desert warfare, were also flown in.

These Malian and regional troops would have the task of securing Gao and its surrounding area, the ministry said.

To the west, French forces recaptured Lere, on the road to Timbuktu, and were advancing, a Malian military source said, asking not be named.

For two weeks, French jets and helicopter gunships have been harrying the retreating Islamists, attacking their vehicles, command posts and weapons depots. The French action had stymied a sudden Islamist offensive launched in early January that had threatened Bamako, Mali's capital in the south of the country.

Reacting to the French-led offensive, one of the leaders of the alliance of Islamist groups occupying Mali's north promised resistance to what he called the "new Crusader aggression", in comments published by Al Jazeera's Arabic website.

Yahya Abu Al-Hamman, leader in the Sahel of al Qaeda's North African wing AQIM, which along with Malian militant group Ansar Dine and AQIM splinter MUJWA occupies Mali's north, said a "Jihadist Islamist emirate" would be created in the territory.

Washington and European governments, while providing airlift and intelligence support to the anti-militant offensive in Mali, are not planning to send in any combat troops.

FRANCE TAKING THE LEAD

At an African Union summit in Addis Ababa, AU leaders called on the United Nations to provide emergency logistics and funding to allow the African force for Mali to deploy.

AU officials say AFISMA is severely hampered by logistical shortages and needs airlift support, ammunition, telecoms equipment, field hospitals, food and water.

There appeared to be some embarrassment among African ministers and leaders that the continent was having to rely on a former colonial power, France, much criticized for past meddling in Africa, to take the lead in the military campaign in Mali.

Rwandan Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo said France's intervention was "justified".

"If Africa can't do it, somebody else should do it," Mushikiwabo told reporters on the sidelines of the summit.

France, which dispatched its military to Mali at the Bamako government's request, already has 2,500 soldiers on the ground in its former colony.

Around 1,900 African troops, including Chadians, have been deployed to Mali so far. Burkina Faso, Benin, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, Niger and Chad are providing troops while Burundi and other African nations have pledged to contribute.

While the French and Malians thrust northeast in a two-pronged offensive towards Gao and Timbuktu, Chadian and local forces in neighboring Niger are preparing a flanking thrust coming up from the south.

FRANCE: "LOT OF WORK" AHEAD

Malian army officers said the Islamist insurgents had pulled back to avoid deadly French air strikes.

"They are all hiding. They are leaving on foot and on motorcycles," Malian Army Captain Faran Keita told Reuters at Konna, about 500 km (310 miles) southeast of Gao.

Konna's capture by the Islamist insurgents on January 10 triggered the sudden French military intervention. Reporters there saw charred rebel pickup trucks that had been blasted by French air strikes. Munitions lay scattered about.

The question remained whether the Islamists would fight to hold Gao and Timbuktu or withdraw further north into the trackless desert wastes and mountain fastnesses of the Sahara.

"France can expel rebels from certain of the key towns but it cannot occupy and control the entire north Mali. North Mali is the size of France," Jakkie Cilliers, Executive Director of the Pretoria-based Institute for Security Studies, told Reuters.

On a visit to Chile, French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault admitted French forces in Mali still faced "a lot of work".

On Friday, the Islamists blew up a road bridge on the main road south from Gao to Niger, but military officials from Niger said the Chadian and Nigerien forces could still reach Gao by other routes when they advanced.

U.S. President Barack Obama spoke to French President Francois Hollande by phone on Friday and expressed support for France's military operation in Mali.

At a conference of donors for the Mali operation to be held in Addis Ababa on January 29, the AU is expected to seek hundreds of millions of dollars in logistical support and funding to assist the deployment of the African intervention force.

Disney says JJ Abrams to direct next 'Star Wars'

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? It's official. The force is with J.J. Abrams.

The Walt Disney Co. issued a statement Friday night confirming reports that had been circulating for two days that Abrams, Emmy-award-winning creator of TV's "Lost" and director of 2009's "Star Trek" movie, has been pegged to direct the seventh installment of the "Star Wars" franchise.

"J.J. is the perfect director to helm this," said Kathleen Kennedy, the movie's producer and president of Lucasfilm, which was acquired by Disney last month for $4.06 billion.

"Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience," Kennedy said in the statement.

The movie will have a script from "Toy Story 3" writer Michael Arndt and a 2015 release.

Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" in the original trilogy, will work as a consultant on the new project.

Abrams has already headed the reboot of another storied space franchise, "Star Trek," for rival studio Paramount Pictures. The next installment in that series, "Star Trek: Into Darkness," is set to hit theaters May 17.

But he has long been known as a "Star Wars" devotee. Abrams spoke about the plot of the original "Star Wars" in the lecture series "TED Talks" in March 2007, and reportedly became enamored of "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof partly because Lindelof was wearing a "Star Wars" T-shirt when they first met.

In 2009, Abrams told the Los Angeles Times: "As a kid, 'Star Wars' was much more my thing than 'Star Trek' was."

In Friday night's statement he called it an "absolute honor" to get the job.

"I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid," Abrams said.

Lucas himself said in the statement that "I've consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He's an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn't be in better hands."

Wintershall makes oil discovery in North Sea

EBR Staff Writer
Published 14 January 2013

Germany-based crude oil and natural gas producer Wintershall has made an oil discovery in the southern part of the Norwegian North Sea.

The company drilled two Asha Noor appraisal wells 16/1-16 and its delineation 16/1-16 A in production licence PL 457 about 3km east of the 16/1-9 discovery well in the Ivar Aasen discovery and about 3km north of the Edvard Grieg field.

Wintershall spud 16/1-16 to a vertical depth of 2,722m and 16/1-16 A to 2,683m below mean sea level and terminated the wells in the Permian Rotliegendes and the Triassic Skagerrak Formation.

The preliminary estimates of the wells indicate about 20 to 40 million barrels of recoverable oil.

The company has performed extensive coring, sampling and data acquisition and the results will be evaluated to further determine the commercial potential of the discovery.

Wintershall Exploration and Production board member Martin Bachmann said the firm has plans to increase its daily production in the Norwegian continental shelf from 4,000 to 50,000 barrels of oil equivalent by 2015.

"Asha Noor is our third oil discovery in Norway in the last 12 months. After our discoveries with the Maria appraisal well and Skarfjell, the Asha Noor discovery provides further confirmation that the Utsira High region offers considerable potential," Bachmann added.

Asha Noor is Wintershall's first well in the production licence PL 457 and it holds the operatorship of the license with 40% interest in it. E.ON, Bridge Energy, and VNG each holds 20% interest in the license.

PBS announces Stephen Hawking and "Latino Americans" docs, new drama "The Bletchley Circle"

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - PBS announced plans for the "first-ever autobiographical documentary of physicist Stephen Hawking, "A Brief History of Mine," as well as the documentary series "Latino Americans" and the new Sunday-night murder mystery "The Bletchley Circle."

The announcements were among several from PBS at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.

"A Brief History of Mine" (a working title) is slated to air this year and will tell Hawking's life story, largely in his own words. It will feature contributors and Hawking fans including astronaut Edwin Eugene "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr., actors Jim Carrey and Benedict Cumberbatch, mathematical physicist Sir Roger Penrose and entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson.

"Latino Americans," a three-part series airing in the fall, will be narrated by Benjamin Bratt and will look at how Latinos have helped shape the United States over more than 500 years. The filmmakers will document the evolution of a "Latino American" identity, from the 1500s to the present day, through interviews with about 100 Latinos in politics, business and pop culture.

The three-part murder mystery "The Bletchley Circle" will air on Sundays beginning on April 21. A production of World Productions distributed worldwide by Content Television, the series aired in the UK in September. It follows ordinary women with the extraordinary ability to break codes, a skill they sharpened during World War II at Bletchley Park, the site of the UK's main decryption site.

The two-hour special "How Sherlock Changed the World," meanwhile, will look at the impact the fictional Holmes had on real investigative techniques. It will premiere in the fall.

PBS also announced that it will hold the second Online Film Festival, featuring short-form films, beginning Monday, March 4, and a multi-platform Independent Film Showcase. Both will feature films from "POV" and "Independent Lens," as well as other public media partners.

Gas that triggers ozone destruction revealed

Jan. 13, 2013 ? Scientists at the Universities of York and Leeds have made a significant discovery about the cause of the destruction of ozone over oceans.

They have established that the majority of ozone-depleting iodine oxide observed over the remote ocean comes from a previously unknown marine source.

The research team found that the principal source of iodine oxide can be explained by emissions of hypoiodous acid (HOI) ? a gas not yet considered as being released from the ocean ? along with a contribution from molecular iodine (I2).

Since the 1970s when methyl iodide (CH3I) was discovered as ubiquitous in the ocean, the presence of iodine in the atmosphere has been understood to arise mainly from emissions of organic compounds from phytoplankton -- microscopic marine plants.??

This new research, which is published in Nature Geoscience, builds on an earlier study which showed that reactive iodine, along with bromine, in the atmosphere is responsible for the destruction of vast amounts of ozone ? around 50 per cent more than predicted by the world?s most advanced climate models ? in the lower atmosphere over the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

The scientists quantified gaseous emissions of inorganic iodine following the reaction of iodide with ozone in a series of laboratory experiments. They showed that the reaction of iodide with ozone leads to the formation of both molecular iodine and hypoiodous acid. Using laboratory models, they show that the reaction of ozone with iodide on the sea surface could account for around 75 per cent of observed iodine oxide levels over the tropical Atlantic Ocean.

Professor Lucy Carpenter, of the Department of Chemistry at York, said: ?Our laboratory and modelling studies show that these gases are produced from the reaction of atmospheric ozone with iodide on the sea surface interfacial layer, at a rate which is highly significant for the chemistry of the marine atmosphere.

?Our research reveals an important negative feedback for ozone ? a sort of self-destruct mechanism. The more ozone there is, the more gaseous halogens are created which destroy it. The research also has implications for the way that radionucleides of iodine in seawater, released into the ocean mainly from nuclear reprocessing facilities, can be re-emitted into the atmosphere.?

Professor John Plane, from the University of Leeds? School of Chemistry, said: ?This mechanism of iodine release into the atmosphere appears to be particularly important over tropical oceans, where measurements show that there is more iodide in seawater available to react with ozone. The rate of the process also appears to be faster in warmer water. The negative feedback for ozone should therefore be particularly important for removing ozone in the outflows of pollution from major cities in the coastal tropics.??

The research was funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council SOLAS (Surface Ocean Lower Atmosphere) programme.

ACCESS receives 20K grant for colorectal cancer program | Times ...

By SHERRI KOLADE
Times-Herald Newspapers

DEARBORN ? A health and research arm of the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services received a $20,000 grant from the American Cancer Society to spread awareness about colorectal cancer.

ACCESS Community Health & Research Center announced the grant in December. Walgreens? Way to Well Commitment, a community-based initiative, donated the grant.

Dr. Adnan Hammad, senior director at ACCESS Community Health, said the first-time one-year grant will go toward debunking stigmas against cancer screenings primarily for residents with a Middle Eastern background.

?This money is very important,? Hammad said. ?The opportunity is even greater than the money because for Arab Americans and the general population, colorectal cancer is always being labeled with a lack of health-seeking behavior in relation to early detection and screening.?

The Walgreens? initiative focuses on promoting health and prevention against diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

Hammad said the goal of the campaign is to educate healthcare professionals, develop and distribute educational bilingual materials, and conduct local health education seminars.

Hammad said the campaign also will let people know that the cancer is preventable ?if we engage in healthy screening after 50 years and above.?

Hammad said cancer control is faced with major barriers ?including cultural inhibition around chronic diseases and access to care.?

?To the community at large, we must pay attention,? Hammad said.

Hammad said sometimes because of cultural reasons, men and women don?t seek colorectal cancer screenings.

?Most people are discovered with cancer at late stages,? Hammad said. ?They are the ones who don?t get screened until their 70s.?

According to www.michigan.gov, the chances of having colorectal cancer increases after age 50 and more than nine out of 10 people with colorectal cancer are older than 50. Colorectal cancer is a significant cause of cancer-related deaths in Michigan. It is a commonly diagnosed cancer in men and women.

Hammad said one colorectal cancer prevention method is eating a lot of fruits and vegetables and little red meat.

?Those habits are good not only for cancer but other chronic diseases.? Hammad said. ?If they don?t have access to health care, ACCCESS can help.?
