Information - Gnomon School of Visual Effects | Professional 3D ...

Join us for a special lighting panel and technology presentation on Thursday, February 16th, starting at 7:30 PM. Moderated by Rob Bredow; artists Josh Mossotti, Kevin Souls, Alessandro Jacomini and Andy Lomas will share a panel discussing how they approach their work by presenting examples of their CG lighting techniques.

Stick around for a technology presentation after the panel, hosted by Andy Lomas and The Foundry. This is a special glimpse at the new look development and lighting tool called KATANA, currently in use at Sony Imageworks, ILM and Digital Domain.

Registration

All LA ACM SIGGRAPH and current Gnomon students with Gnomon School identifcation will be admitted free of charge. Non-members of LA ACM SIGGRAPH are admitted for $20.00. New LA ACM SIGGRAPH members who sign up on-site, and pay the $40 annual membership fee (checks or cash only), do not have to pay the $20 admission fee.

Panel Speakers

Rob Bredow
Chief Technology Officer and Visual Effects Supervisor, Sony Pictures Imageworks

Rob Bredow is Chief Technology Officer and Visual Effects Supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks. As CTO, Bredow brings a production-perspective to the role and has created Imagework?s open source initiative?most recently releasing Alembic, Open Color I/O, and Open Shading Language to the community. Prior to accepting the CTO position, Bredow VFX supervised the films Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Surf?s Up, which was nominated for an Academy Award? and was also recognized with two Annie Awards wins for its effects.

Bredow has been involved in creating many of the complex visual effects featured in The Polar Express, Stuart Little 2, Cast Away, and Academy Award? nominated Stuart Little. Bredow?s other credits include Godzilla, Independence Day and several others.

Alessandro Jacomini
Lighting Supervisor, Disney Animation

Disney Animation?s Lighting Supervisor Alessandro Jacomini just completed working on the animated short Tangled Ever After. Prior to this project, Jacomini was the Lighting Supervisor on Disney?s animated feature Tangled and Sequence Lead on the animated features Bolt and Chicken Little. As a Lighting Artist, Jacomini also contributed to two theme parks productions for Disneyland Orlando and Disneyland Tokyo and to the Disney?s animated feature Dinosaur. Before joining Disney Animation, Jacomini held positions as a Lighting Artist and Technical Director on several visual effects features, theme parks and commercials.

Alessandro Jacomini received his Master?s Degree in Computer Science from ?Universita? degli Studi? of Milan, Italy.

Andy Lomas
Product Manager for KATANA, The Foundry

EMMY Award Winner, Lomas, has over 16 years experience in the computer generated effects and animation industry and joined The Foundry in spring 2010 as Product Manager for KATANA from Framestore, Europe?s largest digital effects company, where he was Head of Computer Graphics. Prior to that, Lomas spent nearly half a decade working in California at DreamWorks and ESC Entertainment as Head of Character Effects and Head of Computer Graphics respectively. Over the last 15 years he has been involved in a variety of projects ranging from commercials and television to live action visual effects and CG feature animation with credits including James Cameron?s widely acclaimed Avatar movie, The Matrix sequels and Walking with Dinosaurs.

Josh Mossotti
3D Artist, LOOK Effects

Josh Mossotti has been providing digital artwork, CG animation and visual effects for feature film and television for over eight years. In that time he has been credited for his work in over 30 feature films including: Underworld Awakening, The Muppets, G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, Terminator Salvation, Fast & Furious 4, Tropic Thunder, Eagle Eye and Wanted. In 2007, he was a part of a development for animated television series Fanboy and Chum Chum. In 2008, Mossotti was nominated for a VES award for his work on the large format IMAX film Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk.

Josh is currently working at LOOK Effects in Los Angeles as a 3D artist.

He is a proud new father and is known for his disarming wit and sense of humor.

Kevin Souls
Lead Lookdev and Lighting Technical Director, Sony Pictures Imageworks

Kevin Souls is a Lead Lookdev and Lighting Technical Director at Sony Pictures Imageworks. At Sony, Kevin has been involved in the transition from Renderman to Arnold for Visual Effects and the use of Katana for their Lighting and Rendering Pipeline. He is currently in the trenches setting up Oz, The Great and Powerful.

Kevin has been involved in creating many of the complex visual effects in the Academy Award nominated Alice in Wonderland, the Sandman Sequence in Spider Man 3, Watchmen, Superman, and the Academy Award winning Spider Man 2. His other credits include I am Legend, Hancock, Godzilla, and many commercials including the Y2K Nike Jogger for Spike Jonze.

He enjoys longs walks while listening to loud music.
